Frequently Asked Questions
About Our Yarns
Eco cashmere is Nordic Yarn’s signature yarn — a blend of 50% virgin Mongolian cashmere and 50% responsibly recycled cashmere fiber, spun by a heritage Italian mill in Prato, Italy. The recycled cashmere is sourced from existing garments and production surplus, sorted by color, and blended with virgin cashmere. The result is a yarn that is exceptionally soft, naturally lofty, and more resistant to pilling than conventional cashmere.
Two key differences. First, the recycled fiber content gives the yarn better durability and pilling resistance — the blended fiber structure creates a stronger yarn without sacrificing softness. Second, the production uses 74% less water, 66% less energy, and produces 78% less CO₂ than conventional cashmere. It’s a higher standard, not a compromise.
Mericash is a blend of 50% extrafine merino wool (GRS certified) and 50% eco cashmere. The merino adds resilience, elasticity, and structure. The cashmere adds softness and loft. It’s an excellent all-purpose yarn; ideal for garments that need to hold their shape through frequent wear.
Both Eco Cashmere and Mericash are DK weight. Eco Cashmere knits at 21–23 stitches per 4 inches on US 6–7 needles. It has significant loft and bloom, so it can also be knit at a worsted weight gauge. Mericash knits at 24–26 stitches per 4 inches on US 4–5 needles.
Our yarn is spun by a heritage mill in Prato, Tuscany. Prato is a region with over a century of expertise in fine fiber and textile production. The virgin cashmere is sourced from Mongolia.
All cashmere will pill to some degree, particularly in areas of friction. However, our eco cashmere is significantly more resistant to pilling than conventional cashmere because the blended recycled fiber creates a stronger yarn structure. Light pilling can be easily managed with a cashmere comb. See our Care Guide for details.
Yarn Colors
We photograph our yarn in natural light and make every effort to represent colors accurately. However, screen settings vary and we cannot guarantee a perfect match. Slight variations between skeins are inherent to recycled fiber yarns and are part of the character of the material.
A dye lot is a batch of yarn dyed together. Skeins from the same dye lot will be consistent in color; skeins from different dye lots may have subtle variations. We recommend purchasing all the yarn you need for a project at the same time to ensure dye lot consistency. We ensure that all skeins in a single order are from the same dye lot for consistency.
The recycled cashmere fiber is sorted by shade before spinning. Only the virgin cashmere is dyed, using non-toxic, environmentally responsible dyes, and matched precisely to the tone of the recycled fiber. This means many of our lighter and natural shades require minimal or no additional dyeing.
Orders and Payment
All prices are in US dollars (USD).
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, and Apple Pay.
Yardage requirements depend on the pattern, your gauge, and the size you’re making. Each pattern lists the yardage needed by size. As a general guide for eco cashmere (164 yds / 50g skein): - Hat: 1–2 skeins - Scarf: 2–3 skeins - Shawl: 3–5 skeins - Sweater: 7–12 skeins.
We recommend purchasing an extra skein for larger projects to account for gauge variations and to avoid running short. Unused, unwound skeins can be returned according to our returns policy.

Caring for Your Cashmere
Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool wash. Soak for ten minutes, rinse gently, press out water without wringing, and lay flat to dry. Never hang wet cashmere. See our full Care Guide for detailed instructions.
We do not recommend machine washing. Even on a delicate cycle, machine washing can felt or damage cashmere fiber.

Misc Questions
Nordic Yarn was founded as a Finnish-Italian company with deep roots in Italy’s textile tradition. The brand is now under new ownership and based in the United States. Our yarn is still made by the same heritage Italian mill in Prato, using the same fibers and processes. The product hasn’t changed but we have invested in the brand, the experience, and expanded inventory.
